Hand out the window
Floatin' on air
Just a flip of the wrist
And I am wavin' you goodbye

Children are usually taught the concept of death at a very early age. The lucky ones learn as they watch a faithful dog or cat being put to sleep, life slowly ebbing from once-powerful limbs, eyes slowly fluttering shut, as peaceful as sleep itself. Less lucky are those who are forced to stay in the stark white rooms of hospitals, machines whirring and beeping to keep a relative alive—grandmother, uncle, sometimes even siblings; the pain is all the same.

And yet, pain is all relative.

He doesn’t exactly remember how he went, nor does he really care. All Gin knew was that the relief which death promised him never came; he simply went from one nightmare to another. If anything, it was worse; now that everyone had experienced a taste of death, they no longer feared it, no longer held back for fear of God’s redemption.

As Gin felt the sting of a blade cutting across his arm, bright red immediately marring the white of his skin, he swore that he would get back. Somehow.

Drive past the lifeguard stand
Where I sit around waiting for you to remember
As I drive

She needed him.

The glint of her hair was clearly visible against the dull green of the grass, and for a moment, all Gin could do was admire the full color of her round curls, tips tickling his fingers as he wove them in the thick strands. His gaze moved to her eyes, lids heavy with exhaustion. If he didn’t act fast, it would be too late—he could tell from the dulled blue color of her irises.

“You’re hungry, aren’t ya? Eat up.”

The days passed.

“Hey, Ran. I wanna get away from it all. Will ya come with?”

How the girls could turn to ghosts before your eyes
And the very dreams that led to them are keeping them from dying
And how the grace with which she walked into your life
Will stay with you in your steps,
And pace with you a while
So long, so long

He remembers first being called into the fifth division headquarters. It had only been a few days since he had graduated from the academy, and yet Gin couldn’t say that it was a surprise. Plopping down in the seat across from the fifth division captain, Gin’s grin widened, crevices in his cheeks capturing the shadows in the room.

“Can’t begin t’tell ya how honored I am, sir. T’be yer new lieutenant.”

It was like looking into a mirror.

“Please. Call me Sousuke.”

The speaker in this door is blown
So nothing sounds quite right
Takin' my time, takin' this drive, wavin' this town goodbye,
And I drive this ocean road and remember
The small of your back
And the nape of your neck
I remember everything as I drive, wavin' this town goodbye

Sousuke asked the same types of questions. What really separated the Hollows from the shinigami? Were they not all working towards the same ends, each seeking the power necessary to run the world as they saw fit?

It wasn’t as though Sousuke’s plan as any more just--rather, Sousuke was just seeking to fulfill his own desires. But it sounded oh so fun, testing the limits of authority, seeing once and for all whether the Gotei had the means to back up their holier-than-thou attitude.

I remember

‘I am merely practicing
Saying goodbye to you.’

How the girls can turn to ghosts before your eyes
And the very dreams that led to them are keeping them from dying
And how the grace with which she walked into your life
Will stay with you in your steps,
Pace with you a while
So long, so long...

To say that he regrets the decision would be a lie. Gin is not a man of regrets, for his actions are carefully planned—always reversible. Even now, he is merely biding his time, slowly allowing the balance to waver, and one can be sure that whichever side ends up winning the war, Gin will be right there with them, taking full advantage of the situation.

And I will leave under the cover
Of summer's kiss upon the sky
Like the stone face of your lover
Just before she says goodbye
I was certain that the season could be held between my arms
Well just as summer's hold is fleeting
I was here but now I'm gone...
I'm gone... I'm gone, I'm gone
I'm gone...

He has only looked back once.

Unlike its wielder, upon first glance, Shinsou doesn’t appear to be the most threatening of weapons. In its unreleased form, Shinsou most closely resembles the traditional Japanese wakizashi blade, with the guard sporting a slightly unconventional ‘S’ shape.

Shinsou’s initial release is triggered by the command ikorose (“shoot to kill”), and essentially involves a high-speed lengthening of the blade with enough force to knock a full-grown man off his feet and throw him several yards back. The extension lasts for as long as Gin’s reiatsu can keep supporting the attack—so far, Gin has never tired enough to necessitate the retraction of his blade, and when released, Shinsou can be swung in wide arcs that manage to hit things within a pretty decent range.

When it comes to his bankai, Gin is generally very hesitant in actually using it, for he often doesn’t need to—and what better way to scare off potential enemies than to dangle his bankai menacingly, yet always out of sight?

Unsurprisingly, Gin’s bankai is relatively simple—the man has never really wanted or needed frills or pretty tricks.

Hailed by the command kiri e (“no retribution for killing those below”), Gin’s bankai involves the simple motion of throwing the zanpakutou in the air, after which a shower of similar blades immediately comes raining down on his opponent at a speed faster even than that of his shikai. What sets kiri e aside from most attacks, however, is a small element of uncertainty; once rained down, Gin gains complete control of the blades, but the initial firing is something that even he cannot predict. Fortunately, the blades are able to pass through his body without harming a single cell, but still—it can be rather disconcerting to have a shower of blades pass right through your chest. Gives him a little scare every time.

Fortunately, it never fails to scare his opponents more.
